About the Program

The Post-Industrial Institute’s Visiting Researcher Program brings participants from organizational members of the Post-Industrial Forum into active PII research programs. The program seeks to accelerate research by combining outside perspectives and expertise with the Institute’s community, methods, and ongoing work.

The Visiting Researcher Program is managed by our Founder, Frode Odegard. Each research program is led by a Principal Investigator who provides intellectual direction and subject-matter guidance.

Why Participate

Visiting researchers work alongside PII team members, research interns, and other participants. Visiting researchers will have the opportunity to advance work in areas they care about, develop new insights, and build professional relationships. The result is an unparalleled educational experience.

Depending on the research program, visiting researchers will:

  • Apply their expertise to an active research question

  • Collaborate with researchers, practitioners, and emerging talent

  • Develop new ideas, frameworks, cases, datasets, or other research resources

  • Publish or present findings individually or with co-authors

  • Gain new perspectives on AI, management, and organizational transformation

How the Program Works

Visiting researchers are matched with research programs based on their expertise, interests, availability, and alignment with current research needs. The Program Manager coordinates the overall experience, while the Principal Investigator for the research program guides the research itself.

At the beginning of the engagement, the researcher and program team establish a clear scope, research objectives, working rhythm, and progress milestone. Participants then collaborate through regular research activity, check-ins, and feedback.

Operating principles:

  • Maintain an atmosphere of collegiality, care, and respect

  • Ensure the engagement benefits both PII and the visiting researcher

  • Structure each engagement around verifiable research progress

  • Acknowledge visiting-researcher participation and contributions

  • PII retains intellectual property created within its research programs

  • PII does not license or use intellectual property belonging to a visiting researcher’s organization

Expected Outcomes

Every visiting researcher is expected to make a substantial contribution and to publish, present, or both at least once each year, either individually or with collaborators. Depending on the research program, the work may include:

  • A research paper or article

  • A presentation of findings

  • A literature review

  • A research framework, taxonomy, or model

  • An interview or case-study collection

  • A dataset, knowledge graph, or other research resource

  • A contribution to an Institute report, e-book, or event

Participants also provide feedback so the program can continue to improve and help strengthen relationships between the Institute, visiting researchers, and participating organizations.

Current Research Opportunities

Research opportunities change as Institute research programs develop. Current research programs include:

Post-Industrial Organizations

Research on the journey toward autonomous organizations, including reusable organizational components, autonomous orchestration, strategy and governance, shared context and information security, inter-organizational design, higher-order organizations, and the relationship between people and organizations. Current projects include PIOML, AGOT, Kepos, and AKAS.

The Global Agent Economy

Research mapping emerging standards and platforms for AI agents and their strategic impact across commerce, product visibility, orchestration, brands, and supply chains.

Human–AI Interaction

Research into how people are affected by using AI and how AI systems can better adapt to individual personalities and cognitive preferences.

Technology and Management Mechanisms

Research tracing how key technologies shape management practices, and how management thinking can be rebuilt from first principles for founders and leaders growing up with AI agents.

Modeling Industry Transformation

Research using the Value Stack and Value Graph to map the shape and evolution of industries, with AI agents helping accelerate data collection and analysis.
