Modeling Industry Transformation

Mapping the shape of industries and how they change

Three colleagues examine a layered stone and glass model of an industry linked by teal fibres, measured by a hovering instrument.

About the Program

Earlier work at PII laid the foundation for two models that map the "shape" of an industry. The Value Stack represents an industry in layers. The Value Graph represents firms and individuals as economic actors connected by relationships.

This program builds on that work to develop both models further. Together they make it possible to study how industries evolve over time, including which layers thicken or collapse, where value moves, and how the network of actors reorganizes.

Our current focus is AI agents for each stage of the work: data collection, modeling, simulation, and visualization.

Research Areas

  • Value Stack modeling of industry structure

  • Value Graph modeling of actors and relationships

  • Agent-assisted data collection and model construction

  • Longitudinal analysis of industry evolution

  • Early signals of industry transformation

Current Projects

Visualization of Industry Structures

In this project we are developing visualization tools for showing the structure of industries and ecosystems, using the Value Graph and Value Stack models. The goal is help both humans and AI agents understand how and why these structures evolve, as well as what can be done to influence their evolution.
