WG2 - The Future of Organizations

Context

The industrial era left us with a dominant organizational model: hierarchical, long-lived firms built around centralized management of people and resources. This model is being disrupted.

The Internet has already enabled decentralized value creation at a scale and speed previously unimaginable. The traditional employment relationship is giving way to more fluid arrangements. Now AI agents are on the cusp of taking over an increasing share of management and strategic work inside and between organizations. Firms are flattening and shrinking in size and lifespan. Boundaries between industries are dissolving.

New organizational archetypes are emerging. One is the Autonomous Organization, where AI agents increasingly handle orchestration, strategy development, execution, and inter-organizational coordination. Another is Higher-Order Organizations, dedicated to the creation of new ventures which may themselves be Autonomous Organizations.

As AI agents are applied to transformation and strategy, the evolution of organizations will accelerate. Smaller organizations will gain access to capabilities previously reserved for large firms. The gap between fast movers and slow adopters will widen rapidly.

Organizations must go beyond using AI for incremental productivity gains and instead rethink strategy, structure, and business models. New operating models and organizational forms are emerging, shaped by the ability to coordinate work through AI agents rather than traditional hierarchies. The pace of transformation itself becomes a source of competitive advantage, with organizations using AI to accelerate adaptation and outmaneuver slower competitors.

As a result, governance becomes a central challenge, as an increasing share of decisions and actions are taken by AI agents rather than humans. Organizations must develop new approaches to risk, accountability, and oversight. Culture also evolves under these conditions, as boundaries become more fluid, tenures become shorter, and work is carried out by hybrid teams of humans and AI.
